RAISED BED AND CONTAINER WEEKLY DIARY
WEEK 3 IN SEPTEMBER
TOMATOES IN CONTAINERS AND GROW-BAGS
Remove any yellowing or diseased leaves. It's also a good idea to
remove any leaves and stems which are touching or near to touching
the earth. By doing this you will be encouraging the tomato plant to
put more energy into producing tomatoes and at the same time reduce
the likelihood of the transfer of disease in the soil.
HARVEST BEETROOT
Continue to harvest beetroot as described in the previous
diary entry here.
The next action, to harvest the last of your beetroot, can be found
here.
OVER-WINTER RAISED BEDS
In
some cooler areas of the UK now is the time when your raised bed
growing is complete. Weed thoroughly and remove any dead or decaying
debris. You may well also need to protect your raised beds from the
attentions of cats looking for a toilet. To do this cover the raised
bed with netting supported and tied to short stakes at the corners.
Containers and grow bags which are no longer producing cops should be emptied of compost, wash the pots and store them in dry conditions. Dispose of empty grow bags in the dustbin. The used compost can be spread round your garden beds if you have one or disposed of. Don't save for next year's containers or raised beds.
