RAISED BED AND CONTAINER WEEKLY DIARY
WEEK 2 IN MAY

HARDEN OFF TOMATO PLANTS
Tomato plants need to be gradually acclimatised to outside conditions before they are planted in the containers or growing bags. Start them off with a few hours outside and slowly increase that time over the next two weeks. Read our full description of this process here. The next step will be to plant out your tomatoes in May week 4.

FIRST THINNING OF BEETROOT
Beetroot is one of those vegetables which taste much better when they are small. When thinning your beetroot seedlings think "baby beet" and allow only 7cm / 3in between seedlings. If you leave only 4cm between seedlings, harvest every other baby beetroot when they start getting crowded in about a month's time.

SECOND SOWING OF BEETROOT
Make a second sowing of beetroot seed this week to ensure that you extend the cropping season. Details instructions can be found here.

SOW MORE LETTUCE SEEDS
See our main article on lettuce for detailed instructions and a video showing how to sow lettuce in raised beds and containers.

THIN LETTUCE SEEDLINGS
Thin lettuce seedlings to about 10cm / 4in apart initially. Later in the year when they start to touch each other harvest the small ones and eat them, these are the most delicious of all lettuces. See our full article on the care of lettuces here.

HARVEST SUMMER RADISH
Harvest summer radishes, see our main radish article by clicking here for full details.

THIRD SOWING OF SPRING ONIONS
Sow your spring onions thinly and cover with a sprinkling of soil, water if the conditions are dry. Staggered sowing of spring onions will extend the cropping season.

WEEKLY FEEDING OF RAISED BEDS
We explain in simple terms how and when to feed the soil in a raised bed. Click here for full details.

FEED POTATOES IN CONTAINERS
We recommend feeding potatoes in containers every other week with a liquid tomato feed. Click here for more details in our main article.
